DAY 2: LONDON TO GHANA

Rose early to enjoy a very complete breakfast buffet at the hotel.  We have both been so impressed at how kind and friendly everyone we encountered has been.  The beautiful staff in the dining room with skin like polished ebony and exotic names were so welcoming.

Checked out wishing we had more time to see more sights and headed across the street to purchase a ticket for the express train back to Heathrow.  First, returned our Oyster Cards (5£ deposit returned plus 5£ we hadn't yet used - really inexpensive site seeing yesterday).

The express train to Paddington Station then transfer to the British Airways' Terminal 5 at the airport proved a much faster trip than the Tube yesterday and just 19£.  Recovered our bags and checked in with lots of time to sit and relax before our flight at 14:25.

..sigh..all those pretty shoes...which ones will follow me home....

At the duty free shop we picked up a bottle of scotch to take to our hotel room.  There was the usual variety but chose this one as the name seemed to have some appropriate significance....

We were definitely a visible minority at gate B42 but really enjoyed watching the sites.

This trip has brought out the Indiana Jones in Francois.  He now says he is ready for a backpacking adventure (with ensuite bath & mini bar of course)

The flight to Accra was long (another 6 1/2 hours) but uneventful.  Great service with British Airways -  much more rule oriented than Air Canada but really pleasant staff.  I joked that I should be reimbursed 1/3 of my ticket cost as the 'ample' woman who sat next to me (although really enjoyable to talk to) took up a good deal of my personal space which seemed to increase as time went on.

Disembarking in Accra was like hitting a wall.  Coming from minus 7 in Montreal to plus 30 and really humid, my glasses were fogging and I could feel my hair curling as we walked from the plane to the terminal.  Francois loves the heat.  I on the other hand may take a day or two to adjust.

Passing through customs at the airport was a breeze - thankful for having our entry Visas in advance. ALL of our luggage arrived with contents intact (not always the situation from what we were told).  We did pack extras in our carryons just in case but 3 legs of the trip, anything could have happened.

The sergeant in charge of administration for the trip and course met us at the airport with our driver.  Not used to having someone carry my luggage.  It's the sort of pampering I could easily get used to though.

Our hotel (Labadi Beach) was just as beautiful at night as the pictures we had seen on the internet.  The lobby was furnished with so many interesting pieces and the staff was very welcoming.  The glass of champagne while we registered was a nice touch.

Our room located in an adjoining villa is just a couple minutes walk from the main hotel. We returned to the bar to enjoy a local beer with some of the guys before returning to our room to unpack a bit so we could at least find some essentials in the morning.

A wee dram of the Monkey Shoulder with our mulberry travel candle for atmosphere - the perfect going away gift. (many thanks S & P for being so thoughtful)..

Actually made it passed midnight.  No jetlag for these travellers.....
