IN SEARCH OF THE AFRICAN BIG FIVE

...the phrase Big Five game was coined by white hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. The members of the Big Five were chosen for the difficulty in hunting them and the degree of danger involved, rather than their size...

...I was saddened and surprised to find that hunting wild game is still sanctioned if the species is not considered endangered or vulnerable...

...but for the purpose of our safari and this blog no animals of any species were harmed, with exception maybe of the human species which did suffer a few bumps, bruises and insect bites during our stay...Francois felt it was good training for his upcoming 13km forced march...

...black rhinoceros - classified as critically endangered...

...lion - classified as endangered...

...African bush elephant - classified as endangered...

...leopard - classified as vulnerable and near threatened...

...white rhinoceros - classified as vulnerable and near threatened...

...the African buffalo is the most popular Big Five to hunt, as its conservation status is least concern...

...in the following posts are the pictures we captured of
the BIG FIVE...
